This entire work is based on a simple syncopated theme in 5/4 where the beat is obscured by a single 16th-note rest, giving the listener multiple interpretations of the pulse. This theme goes through many transformations, adding diddles, singles, flams, and even a solo section to feature a different player in the line on each performance.
